And everything this beautiful season brings
When the leaves on the trees turn golden yellow and the mornings feel crisp, a quiet shift takes place. It is not just about turning up the heating a degree higher, pulling out comfortable sweaters, and bringing casserole dishes back to the table—the contents of our glasses undergo a clear transformation as well. Gone are the ice-cold, thirst-quenching patio wines; autumn calls for depth, structure, and rich aromas.
What's more, this is perhaps the most exciting time of year for the wine world: harvest has begun!
Bustle and Tension on the Golden Hills
In Burgundy, autumn represents the ultimate climax of a whole year of hard work. The grape harvest (the vendange) runs at full speed during these weeks. Winemakers walk nervously between the rows, keep an anxious eye on weather forecasts, and hope for that perfect balance between sugars, acidity, and ripeness.
It is a period of manual labor, emotion, and craftsmanship. Grapes from the latest harvest are brought in, pressed, and taken down to the cellars to begin their long transformation into wine. As fermentation starts below ground, the landscape of the Côte d'Or transforms into a breathtaking palette of yellow, orange, and deep red—it is for good reason that the department is named Côte d'Or (the Golden Slope).
From Crisp to Layered: What Are We Drinking in Autumn?
While summer makes us crave sharp, fresh acidity and light-footed profiles to beat the heat, autumn calls for more refined richness and warmth.
Fuller-Bodied Whites:
Ultra-light, sharp white wines give way to white Burgundies with more structure. Think of a gorgeous Meursault or a riper Saint-Véran. Oak aging brings subtle notes of toasted bread, hazelnut, and a rich, creamy mouthfeel—divine alongside mushroom dishes, creamy sauces, or roasted poultry.
Supple Yet Ripe Reds:
Summer red wines are often served slightly chilled, but autumn reds can show a bit more backbone. Even so, you do not need to pour heavy powerhouses for the cooler months. A refined Pinot Noir from Burgundy, featuring its signature aromas of ripe red fruit, earthy notes, undergrowth, and a hint of spice, pairs seamlessly with autumn cuisine.
Taste the Season on the Plate (and in Your Glass)
Autumn cooking is a feast for the senses: game dishes, classic boeuf bourguignon, roasted pumpkin, chestnuts, and wild mushrooms. The secret to a great pairing lies in connecting the earthy notes in the food with the layers of the wine.
Ready to welcome autumn in style? Uncork a beautiful bottle, set a stew on the stove, and enjoy everything this season has to offer.
