Today, the most interesting white and red Burgundy wines come from the Mâconnais. Here, they offer great tension at highly competitive prices compared to the north of Burgundy.

Initial tasting notes for the 2024 vintage suggest that whites from the Mâconnais often mirror the profile of a Chablis or the cooler zones of the Côte de Beaune, much like in 2021. While other appellations struggle with tricky weather conditions, the Mâconnais puts itself in the spotlight once again! More a fan of a rich style of Chardonnay? Then pick something from the generous 2020, 2022, and 2023 vintages.

The Mâconnais is situated west and northwest of the city of Mâcon, along the banks of the Saône River. The region covers an area roughly 50 kilometers long and 15 kilometers wide. It is also the southernmost wine region of Burgundy, stretching from Sennecey-le-Grand to Saint-Véran. The landscape is characterized by parallel ridges running from north to south. While the famous Côte d’Or has only a single slope, the Mâconnais boasts far more diverse mineral soil types and exposures. This varied topography, with its array of aspects, makes the Mâconnais not only a source of highly distinct and complex wine styles, but also a refuge should the climate continue to warm.
