Wines like this don’t just happen. On the steep granite slopes of Coteaux de Bassenon – the southernmost lieu-dit of Côte-Rôtie – grow vines planted as far back as 1896. What’s harvested here is rare, deep-rooted and intensely expressive. This unfiltered, unsulfured natural wine is a true reflection of its rugged origins: pure, powerful and profoundly compelling.
On the nose: blackcurrant, violets, wild herbs, cracked pepper. The palate is compact and intense, with concentrated juice, structured tannins and a smoky, long finish touched with dark chocolate bitterness. Viognier adds an aromatic lift and floral tension. A rare blend with old-world soul and vibrant energy.
This natural Côte-Rôtie thrives alongside bold and flavourful dishes:
Since the 1990s, Maison Stéphan has been a benchmark for natural Côte-Rôtie without compromise. Long before it was trendy, Jean-Michel Stéphan made wine without sulfites, without filtration and with an unwavering respect for terroir. With vines dating back to the 19th century and a commitment to rare Syrah clones like Serine, his Coteaux de Bassenon is a masterpiece of tension, depth and authenticity.
Looking for a Rhône wine that stirs both your senses and your soul? Côte-Rôtie 2019 from Maison Stéphan is raw, structured, and utterly unforgettable.
