A robust Burgundy Chardonnay with backbone!

A mini Meursault but from the south of Burgundy. Barrel-aged Chardonnay. Powerful, rich, southern, with creamy curves and underlying mineral freshness. Thirst-quenching fresh pineapple, red and green apples, lemon peel, orange, salt, butter, mint, nuts, brioche, cardamom, vanilla, and wax. A sense of luxury without feeling heavy, just like a Meursault. Enjoy this wine in a large glass, and don't serve it too cold. This way, the aromas of cardamom, apple pie, and brioche come through beautifully. This wine is much more serious than its peers due to its strong backbone. You'll find this style more often in the north of Burgundy for 30 euros or more. That’s why this wine is truly a "find"!

Incontournable, unmissable, unavoidable, essential, indispensable. In short, this wine is a must-have for any Burgundy lover's wine collection.

Hand-picked from 70-year-old vines (Vieilles Vignes) and aged for about 12 months in a mix of old (6 years old) and new (15%) French oak for body and complexity. Since the 2019 vintage, this wine is no longer malolactically fermented, giving it a purer, cleaner feel. No more lactic notes of yogurt; the roundness of this wine is achieved through subtle oak use and ripe fruit from the southern Mâconnais region. This wine is in its final year of organic conversion before officially carrying the BIO label on the bottle.

Food Pairing

Serve with rich fish dishes, sushi, or lobster. However, it also works wonderfully in a refined aperitif setting. In short, it's very versatile!

Domaine Normand

Normand's strength with southern flair. Normand was actually our neighbor when we ran our B&B, Maison Mazille. We witnessed their growth up close. Alain Normand comes from the Loire Valley, but his ancestral home is Normandy, hence his name. This makes him a Norman, and true to his Viking roots, he is (by French standards) a tall, red-haired man. He met Sylvaine, a native of Burgundy, at wine school in Beaune. They began their career by taking over an abandoned vineyard in La Roche-Vineuse with a métayage contract, a common French agricultural practice where the landlord is paid in wine. Alain Normand now cultivates 35 hectares in La Roche-Vineuse, a village nestled on the steep flank of a massive limestone outcrop that gives the village its name. The village straddles the small pass that cuts through the Mâcon ridges leading to Cluny, the medieval seat of power of the Benedictine monastic order. One of their secret weapons is the Bourgogne Pinot Noir cuvée Esus, which even wins over non-Pinot Noir lovers with its seductive vanilla tones and warmth. Additionally, their buttery Chardonnays have strong backbones and a signature crème brûlée vanilla nose.
Mâconnais: The Undiscovered Gem of Burgundy
The Mâconnais, located in southern Burgundy, is a region often overshadowed by the prestigious vineyards of the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits. However, in recent years, this region has gained much attention for the excellent value for money its wines offer. While more renowned areas of Burgundy command steep prices, the Mâconnais produces high-quality wines with unique character without breaking the bank. For many wine lovers exploring Burgundy, the Mâconnais is a delightful discovery, proving that top wines don't always have to come from the most expensive regions.

What is produced in the Mâconnais?

The Mâconnais is best known for its white wines, primarily made from the Chardonnay grape. The region has numerous appellations, with Mâcon-Villages, Viré-Clessé, Pouilly-Fuissé, and Saint-Véran being the most prominent. These wines are fresh, fruity, and often characterized by a fine minerality reminiscent of top wines from northern Burgundy, but with a softer, more approachable style. Wines from the Mâconnais often express a distinct terroir, varying subtly from village to village, giving each bottle a unique character.

Which dishes pair with Mâconnais wines?
The white Chardonnay wines from the Mâconnais are versatile and pair perfectly with a wide range of dishes. They are an excellent choice for shellfish and seafood, such as oysters, shrimp, lobster, and crab. They also pair well with light fish dishes with subtle herb sauces. Additionally, they are ideal for poultry dishes, especially when served with mushrooms or light sauces. For dessert, these wines pair wonderfully with soft cheeses like Brie or Camembert.
The red wines, made from the Gamay or Pinot Noir grape, are lighter in style and pair well with poultry, veal, duck, and chicken. They are less suited for heavy game dishes but go beautifully with earthy vegetables, mushrooms, root vegetables, and risotto. Both red and white wine varieties are versatile and can even be served with light desserts.

Buying Mâconnais Burgundy Wines

At Burgundy or Nowhere, you'll find an extensive selection of Mâconnais wines, from well-known names to hidden gems. We are particularly excited about the wines from Domaine de la Chapelle, whose Saint-Véran is known for its impressive depth and complexity at a reasonable price. Also, the Pouilly-Fuissé AX-B from the same domaine is an excellent choice for those seeking a high-quality Mâconnais experience without the high price tag of the Côte d'Or. Our goal is to offer wines where the price reflects what's inside the bottle, not just the name on the label.
