Saint-Véran 'En Faux' 2022, Joseph Deshaires - Domaine de Beauregard

Both the Saint-Véran "En Faux" under the Joseph Burrier (Château de Beauregard) label and the one under the Joseph Deshaires name are the exact same cuvée, originating from the very same vineyard and cellar.

The differences lie solely in branding, market access, and label design: under this label (Joseph Deshaires), we can actually offer the exact same wine for a fraction of the price! Just search online and you will see prices around 40 euros!

Terroir and Wine (100% Identical)

  • Parcel: Both labels feature the exact same single-climat cuvée: the south-facing "En Faux" parcel in Chasselas (at an altitude of 270 meters, rich in red Entroque limestone). Known in French as calcaire à entroques, this is a specific type of sedimentary rock rich in fossilized remains of crinoids (sea lilies). The term 'entroque' refers to the fossilized stems or segments of these prehistoric sea creatures that covered the seabed millions of years ago. In the wine world, entroque limestone is a renowned soil type, particularly in Burgundy. Vineyards in areas such as the Côte de Nuits (e.g., Gevrey-Chambertin) and the Mâconnais (around the landmark Roche de Solutré in Pouilly-Fuissé) sit on these specific limestone layers.
  • Vinification: Both variations are aged in the exact same way by the same winemaking team at Maison Joseph Burrier / Château de Beauregard (oak aging on fine lees followed by tank aging).

Saint-Véran is one of the finest wine villages in the far south of Burgundy. Where prices in the Côte de Beaune are rising rapidly, Domaine de Beauregard delivers impressive precision and richness at a fair price. This 'En Faux' is a textbook example of how single-vineyard Chardonnay grown on limestone- and iron-rich soil should taste: mineral-driven, ripe, buttery, and full of energy.

The wine displays a bright golden-yellow color and opens with expressive aromas of ripe yellow fruit and crisp citrus. On the palate, the combination of rich maturity and a taut, mineral structure is immediately striking. As the wine ages, refined notes of honey and toasted bread develop. The finish is long, clean, and lingers with a fresh citrus note paired with that highly sought-after touch of butter.

Key Features

  • Terroir: Chardonnay from ~40-year-old vines on a south-facing slope of the Mont de Pouilly (270m altitude). Soil of red-bronze clay and limestone over hard calcaires à Entroques.
  • Oak Aging: Natural fermentation with indigenous yeasts in oak barrels (228L), followed by ~12 months aging on fine lees and a brief settling period in stainless steel vats.
  • Sustainability: Organic. Natural, patient, and minimal-intervention winemaking focused on terroir expression.
  • Flavor Profile: Expressive yellow fruit, mineral precision, crisp citrus, and a taut, long finish.
  • Aging Potential: Wonderfully accessible in its youth thanks to its ripe fruit expression, but holds great potential to evolve beautifully.

Food Pairing

  • Fish & Shellfish: Excellent with grilled or pan-seared fish, scallops (Coquilles Saint-Jacques), and fish in creamy sauces.
  • Poultry & Classics: Pairs wonderfully with refined poultry, quenelles, or traditional andouillette.
  • Cheese: A stunning match with Mâconnais goat cheeses or aged hard cheeses.
  • Serving Tip: Best served between 12°C and 15°C.

The 2022 Vintage The 2022 vintage in the Mâconnais is characterized by excellent grape ripeness while retaining necessary fresh acidity. The Chardonnay grapes reached ideal ripeness under perfect conditions, resulting in wines with great concentration, generous fruit expression, and a taut, refreshing minerality on the finish.
