Biodynamic red Burgundy from the Côte Chalonnaise. An attractive ruby-red Burgundy with a silky mouthfeel filled with plenty of crisp, small red fruits. A crunchy texture, medium acidity, elegant, light, clean, and very soft. Delicate yet with an absolutely enchanting nose of rose petals, fresh red fruit, warm spices, vanilla, and cocoa. Ever wanted to serve red wine with fish? Lightly grilled tuna is a perfect match for this light and smooth red Burgundy.
Given the elegant character of this Pinot Noir, I personally prefer to drink it as an aperitif. According to winemaker Sandrine, 'Coulée' (flowing) can easily be translated to English: she says this wine is ‘Cool’. I couldn't agree more! The approachable nature of this red Burgundy is exactly where its strength lies. Since 2021, La Coulée Douce --->>> became La Coulée Rare (rare) due to the blending of harvests from different vineyards caused by vintage complications. This creates a certain synergy with diverse qualities that contribute to the complexity, all without needing to pay extra for it.
It's worth noting that due to climate change, the boundaries of prime vineyards are shifting. A previously less favorable vineyard that was more shaded and received less ripening is now just as good as its neighboring 1er Cru counterpart, although no one would ever admit it.
This 2021 vintage instantly brings back great memories! Just like in 2017, when I first discovered this new domaine. Normally, they favor a fuller, richer new-age Pinot style like '18, '19, '20, but '21, like their '17, embodies everything I truly love and long for in a good red Burgundy. That delicate, feminine, light-footed character of the Pinot Noir grape with its beautifully enchanting perfume. Do you prefer the fuller style of this winery? The Givry Rouge, Les Plants sont Fleuris - Sélection 2017 has high concentration and plenty of structure, perfect for serving at the table during a meal.
Vinification in concrete tanks for 2 weeks, no added sulfur. Wild yeasts. Then aged in 15% new oak barrels.
Domaine Luolle is run by Olivier and Sandrine Dovergne. After a world sailing trip (called "Vents d'Anges"), Olivier and Sandrine decided to follow their passion and start producing their own wines. The domaine is full of charm and has been practicing organic farming for multiple generations.
The Côte Chalonnaise, located just south of the prestigious Côte de Beaune, is often an overlooked region in Burgundy. Despite its lesser-known name, this area is gaining popularity for its excellent value-for-money wines. While the renowned vineyards of the Côte d'Or often command high prices, the Côte Chalonnaise offers high-quality wines with unique character, without the heavy price tag. For wine lovers looking to explore more of Burgundy, the Côte Chalonnaise is a delightful surprise that proves top wines don’t always have to be expensive.
The Côte Chalonnaise is known for both its red and white wines. The red wines are primarily made from Pinot Noir, while the white wines are often made from the Chardonnay grape. The region is home to various appellations, including Mercurey, Givry, Rully, Bouzeron, and Montagny. Wines from this region often have a refined structure and a pronounced terroir, giving each bottle its own unique character. The red wines from Mercurey, for example, are known for their firm yet elegant tannins, while the white wines from Montagny are celebrated for their freshness and minerality.
The wines from the Côte Chalonnaise are versatile and pair well with a wide range of dishes. The fresh Chardonnay wines are excellent with seafood, light fish dishes, and poultry. They also pair perfectly with creamy sauces and soft cheeses like Brie and Camembert. The Pinot Noir wines are ideal with poultry, veal, and lighter meat dishes like duck and chicken. They also go well with dishes featuring earthy flavors, such as mushrooms, carrots, and risotto. Both types of wine, red and white, are suitable for pairing with a light meal or even some desserts.
At Burgundy or Nowhere, you will find an extensive selection of Côte Chalonnaise wines, from well-known names to hidden gems. We are particularly excited about the wines from Domaine de la Luolle, with both their Givry and Mercurey wines standing out for their complexity and depth, all at a reasonable price. Our goal is to offer wines that reflect the quality inside the bottle, not just the name on the label.
